On our ever-growing List Of Things We'd Like To Do Around The House there was always one item that hovered closer to the top of the list. Do Something With The Effed Up Family Room.
This room has been the bane of my existence for 4 years, 8 months and a few days. (Since we moved in). It's wide, but not wide enough. Long, but not long enough. The fireplace was not centered, and the windows make it challenging to place furniture. The cable hook up was in the far, far dark nasty corner - basically it was just a cluster and we hated it. It was not good for sitting and hanging out, sucked for entertaining. This room barely if ever got used so it was like 400 square feet of wasted space.
We thought that adding in some built in's would solve at least some of the problems. We could cover most of the stupid brick that was off center. We'd gain storage. It would ground the room.
IT IS SO AWESOME!!!
Tony Skipper (Tar River Custom Cabinets) did the book cases - Ken did all the custom moldings and the new mantel. We got a great deal on TV, and found a new blue ray that does Netflix and Hulu+, etc - so we didn't have to pay even more for crappy Time Warner cable. Plus the Canadian satellite... (oh yeah, that's curling on TV in the pics!!)
There are still a few more things to do... paint the walls and ceiling... eventually hardwoods to replace the carpet - and new furniture. But all in time - for now - it's GREAT and so much more functional!!
Long term... my vision is to bash down the triple window along the back wall, and have that be french doors leading out to a screen porch... with a fireplace in the corner where that left side door currently is (get rid of that door since we never use it - we go in and out of the door to the right of the windows).
But that is a long time away!!!
